Over the century, this street has greatly evolved from its meager beginnings to become one of the most vibrant and bustling streets of Montreal. As hard as it may seem to believe, this street was once little more than a dirt road, in the middle of what would later become the 'Latin Quarter'. This name originates from the 'Quartier Latin' in Paris, France, where one could study Latin at the Université de la Sorbonne. In 1864, the tramway was added to 'la rue St-Denis', and made the street into a main thoroughfare, linking the southern part of the city to the northern areas. Over the decades, many institutions would make St-Denis their chosen site: the Saint-Jacques Cathedral, the Saint-Jacques school, the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM), the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, the National Library, the Saint-Denis Theatre, the National Film Board, the Cinématheque Québécoise, the Latin Quarter Cinema as well as many shops. It is this hub of activity and its proximity to the Palais des Congres (conference centers) of the Plateau Mont-Royal and the Old Montreal that make the Latin Quarter the place of choice for business executives, students and visitors |
